You don't need to be a data scientist to understand your website visitors. Here are the five numbers that actually matter for a local café.
You Don't Need to Be a Data Expert
Google Analytics can feel overwhelming when you first log in. There are hundreds of reports, charts and metrics, and it's easy to spend an hour clicking around without learning anything useful. The good news is that for a local independent café, you really only need to understand five things.
This guide assumes you already have Google Analytics installed on your website. If you don't, it's a free tool and well worth adding - ask your web developer, or get in touch with us and we can point you in the right direction.
The Five Numbers That Matter
1. How many people visit your website each month? In Google Analytics 4, this is called "Active Users." A healthy independent café website typically sees between 500 and 2,000 visits per month, depending on location and how active you are on social media. If your number is very low (under 200), it suggests your website isn't being found easily.
2. Where are they coming from? The "Traffic Acquisition" report tells you whether people are finding you through Google search, social media, direct (typing your URL), or referrals from other websites. If almost all your traffic is "direct," it means people already know about you but you're not attracting new customers through search.
3. What pages do they look at?The "Pages and Screens" report shows which pages get the most views. For a café, you'd hope to see your menu page near the top - if nobody's looking at your menu, it might be hard to find, or it might not be mobile-friendly.
4. How long do they stay?"Average Engagement Time" tells you whether people are actually reading your content or bouncing away immediately. If people are leaving within 10 seconds, your website might be loading too slowly, or the content isn't matching what they expected to find.
5. Are they on mobile?Under "Tech" > "Devices," you can see the split between mobile, desktop and tablet visitors. Most café websites see 60-75% mobile traffic. If your website isn't optimised for mobile, you're likely losing a significant number of potential customers.
Setting Up One Simple Goal
The most valuable thing you can do in Google Analytics is set up a "conversion" - a specific action you want visitors to take. For a café, this might be clicking your phone number, clicking "Get Directions," or submitting a booking form.
Once you have a conversion set up, you can start to understand which marketing activities are actually driving real customer actions, not just website visits.
Don't Have Analytics Yet?
If your website doesn't have Google Analytics installed, you're flying blind. It's free, takes about 10 minutes to set up, and will immediately start giving you valuable data about how customers find and use your website.
