Most independent cafés are losing customers every week because their address, phone number or opening hours are wrong on Google, Facebook and dozens of other sites. Here's how to fix it fast.
Why Your Listings Matter More Than You Think
When someone searches "café near me" on Google, they're not just looking at your website - they're seeing information pulled from dozens of different directories, maps and review platforms. If your address is wrong on even one of them, you could be sending customers to the wrong door.
Our analysis of independent cafés across Birmingham and Manchester found that the average café has accurate listings on fewer than 30% of the major platforms. That means 70% of the time, a potential customer might find incorrect information about your business.
The good news? Fixing this doesn't require any technical knowledge, and the most important platforms can be sorted in under an hour.
The Platforms That Matter Most
Not all listing sites carry equal weight. Focus on these first:
Google Business Profile is by far the most important. It powers Google Maps, Google Search results, and the knowledge panel that appears when someone searches your café's name directly. If you haven't claimed and verified your profile, do this today - it's free and takes about 15 minutes. Facebook is the second most important, particularly for cafés with an older or more local customer base. Make sure your address, phone number and opening hours match exactly what's on Google. Apple Maps is increasingly important as iPhone users rely on it heavily. You can manage your listing through Apple Business Connect, which is free. Bing Places and TripAdvisor round out the top tier. Both are free to claim and manage. The Golden Rule: NAP Consistency
NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. These three pieces of information must be absolutely identical across every platform. Even small differences - like "St" vs "Street", or a missing space in your postcode - can confuse search engines and reduce your local search ranking.
Before you start updating listings, write down your definitive NAP:
- Your exact business name (as you want it to appear everywhere)
- Your full address, including postcode
- Your primary phone number, in the same format every time
Then use this as your master reference when updating each platform.
A Quick Audit Checklist
Work through each platform and check:
1. Is your business name spelled correctly and consistently?
2. Is your address complete and accurate?
3. Is your phone number correct and in a consistent format?
4. Are your opening hours up to date, including any seasonal changes?
5. Have you added your website URL?
6. Do you have at least 5 recent photos?
Keeping It Updated
The biggest mistake cafés make is updating their listings once and then forgetting about them. Set a reminder every three months to check your top five platforms, and always update your listings immediately whenever your hours, address or phone number changes - especially around bank holidays and Christmas.
"79% of customers do online research before visiting a local business. If they find wrong information, they'll simply go somewhere else."
